Downtown LA is an area where events and activities happen just inside the building and veiled from the city. Therefore in this project, we create moments of punctuation to expose the vibrancy of the interiors to the city and break down the entire space into many different spaces so that people can get many parts of the building at one time and experience the building as a series of stories.
In general, for the market area, we maintain the existing flower market as a plinth and we insert new market pavilions with spherical volumes into the plinth, breaking down the perimeter walls, creating a sequence of experiences for people inside the building, and a series of deep views for people walking by on the outside. For the residential tower, we wrapped different volumes into one integral mass, creating introverted event space for the residential. At some moments, the elevated event spaces are open to create views connecting to the adjacent city. Each exposed volume contains a different artificial texture with undefinable edge, which represents the real quality of nature, such as decay, over-growth and abundance of texture.
